Julia Michaels, the pop star comes alive in her concert !!

Michaels began her career at the age of 16 writing songs for some of the biggest names in pop music. Artists such as Selena Gomez, Shawn Mendes, Britney Spears, and Justin Bieber. Although her fame rose from songwriting , Julia Michaels in her own right was nothing short of a powerhouse. Her voice and presence were so energetic that almost for a minute you forgot she was singing about issues that make life a little harder. Things like mental health, wanting to be “Happy,” and heartbreaks.

As the crowd (who was lined up around the block) packed into the Enmore Theatre on Thursday night, the energy was palpable. First up was English singer-songwriter Rhys Lewis, who, we found out later in Michael’s set, was handpicked by her to open. That is a huge compliment coming from someone as prolific as Michaels, and Lewis definitely lived up to that hype. He serenaded the audience with only a guitar and keys, inciting singalongs AND phone-lit hand sways – the sign of every great performance.

The stage was then set up with gorgeous lit-up flowers, and a sign that read:

Julia Michaels – Judgement Free Zone.

Encouraged:

  • Singing
  • Dancing
  • Jumping
  • Feeling
  • Laughing

Michaels then came out on stage to a huge applause, busting straight into ‘Pink’. Her set was filled to the brim with pure hits like ‘I Miss You’ (her collaboration with Clean Bandit), ‘Worst In Me’, ‘Heaven’, ‘Uh Huh’, and plenty more.

Probably the best piece of the show was her accentuation on making the ha;; a protected space. This was where it was alright to cry, it was alright to move, it was alright to be energized, and she would be every one of those things with us. A sign of Julia’s music is the way that she isn’t reluctant to discuss anxiety or depression, and she consoles the group that they are not the only one, that they have her, and they have her music.

For her encore, she began with ‘What A Time’, with Rhys Lewis filling in for Niall’s segment, and after that completely tore the house down with ‘Issues’ to cut off the set. ‘Issues’ may have been her previously hit, yet it was an ideal completion of a night where she urged the group to not be embarrassed that they may have ‘issues’, with this verse including nearly her whole ethos where the whole hall went on chorus with her.
