On discute nouvel album et tournée avec All Time Low

A l’occasion de leur passage à la Cigale le 22 février dernier, nous avons eu l’occasion d’interviewer Alex Gaskarth et Jack Barakat d’All Time Low. Tournée, nouvel album à venir… Retour sur cet échange !

Pozzo Live : Est-ce que vous allez bien ? Est-ce que votre famille, vos proches vont bien ? 

Alex : On va super bien, tout le monde va bien. On est heureux d’être ici vous savez, on n’a pas tourné en Europe depuis 2017 donc c’est incroyable d’être de retour.

Pozzo Live : Cela fait plus de cinq ans que l’on ne vous avait pas vu en Europe on est ravi de vous de revoir ! On espère que vous aussi, s’il vous plait dites oui !

Jack : NON ! Oui, on est heureux. Le fait d’avoir attendu autant de temps rend notre retour ici encore meilleur.

Pozzo Live : Votre album Wake Up, Sunshine est sorti entre temps, en pleine pandémie. Comment avez-vous appréhendé la sortie de cet album ? 

Alex : C’était vraiment une période bizarre pour sortir de la musique. Il y a même eu quelques moments où on s’est dit qu’on ferait mieux de ne peut-être pas sortir l’album, parce que les choses étaient trop incertaines. Mais on a décidé de nous-mêmes qu’on pensait que de la nouvelle musique pourrait bénéficier à nos fans et au public. Ça permettait de se sentir toujours connecté à quelque chose, quand tout le reste était si déconnecté. Donc on a encaissé les coups, et c’est un peu devenu notre album de confinement. Ce qui est dommage, c’est que l’on n’a pas vraiment eu l’occasion de vraiment tourner sur cet album, donc c’est vraiment cool d’être ici maintenant. Pas seulement pour que les nouveaux morceaux fassent leurs débuts sur scène mais aussi pour jouer les chansons de Wake Up, Sunshine en Europe. Ça déchire.

Pozzo Live : Avec 3 nouveaux singles on imagine qu’un nouvel album est en route. Qu’est-ce que vous pouvez nous dire dessus ? On veut TOUT savoir !

Alex : C’est de la musique.

Jack : C’est treize chansons.

Alex : Je suis surexcité. Tell Me I’m Alive est une sorte d’album d’anthologie de toutes les chansons sur lesquelles nous avons travaillées et que nous avons créées pendant une bonne partie du confinement, même après avoir sorti Wake Up, Sunshine. Comme on ne pouvait pas faire de tournée, on pouvait écrire et continuer d’être créatifs. Pendant ces deux dernières années où le monde est revenu à la normale, ou à un nouveau « normal », on a continué de faire de la musique. Et une grande partie de cet album est venue comme ça. C’est un album formidable, c’est une collection de chansons géniale, et je suis surexcité à l’idée qu’il sorte bientôt.

Jack : Certaines chansons ont été écrites pendant la pandémie il y a genre deux ans, donc on est prêt à le sortir maintenant. Il aura fallu du temps !

Pozzo Live : Cela fait maintenant 20 ans qu’All Time Low existe, après toutes ces années est-ce que votre vision a évolué ? Le fait d’être des personnalités publiques, votre rapport aux fans que ce soit sur scène ou hors scène ? 

Alex : On fait ça depuis longtemps et c’est génial d’avoir en quelque sorte grandi avec nos fans. Ce qui est le plus cool pour nous, c’est qu’on a commencé ce groupe quand on avait 17-18 ans et qu’on jouait pour un public plus jeune, et on parlait à nos pairs. En grandissant au sein du groupe, je trouve ça cool qu’un bon nombre de nos fans des débuts aient grandi avec nous. Mais on a aussi eu des nouvelles vagues de fans qui sont plus jeunes et qui nous ont rejoint. Je trouve ça toujours génial parce qu’il y a cette répétition constante de gens qui découvrent la musique, le groupe, et qui nous rejoignent grâce aux nouvelles chansons, puis qui vont écouter notre ancienne musique. C’est vraiment génial de former ces liens.

Jack : Personnellement, je pense que nous, en tant que fans d’autres groupes, on a une relation similaire. Je lui disais l’autre jour [à Alex, ndlr], que j’ai découvert des groupes récemment qui sont là depuis 15 ans. Je trouve ça cool que la musique ne soit pas cyclique comme ça. On peut tomber amoureux d’un groupe à n’importe quel moment de leur carrière et devenir un énorme fan. Je racontais à Alex que je suis devenu accro à The Smiths l’année dernière. J’ADORE THE SMITHS ! Et ils sont là depuis longtemps. Je pense que c’est ce qu’il y a de plus cool à propos de la musique.

Pozzo Live : Comment se déroule une session d’écriture ? Est-ce que vous êtes tous ensemble ou bien un leader compose la majorité dans son coin ? 

Alex : Je dirais que c’est un peu différent pour chaque chanson. Il y a des chansons pour lesquelles j’ai travaillé indépendamment du groupe, et d’autres chansons, plus récemment avec Wake Up, Sunshine et le nouvel album Tell Me I’m Alive, où on a tout fait ensemble. Jack écrit beaucoup plus dernièrement. Rien n’est défini, on fait ce qui nous semble le mieux au moment voulu. Mais l’une des choses que je préfère quand on se réunit tous les quatre sous un même toit pour écrire, c’est l’énergie que cela apporte aux chansons. Ça, on ne le retrouve pas quand la chanson est faite uniquement par le producteur et moi, ou quelque chose comme ça. Il y a quelque chose qui ressort vraiment quand chacun met son grain de sel. Au final, je trouve que les chansons ont une meilleure énergie quand on les écrit tous ensemble.

Pozzo Live : Est-ce que vous avez une anecdote amusante à nous raconter ? Sur scène ou hors scène.

Jack : On a loué une maison à Aspen l’an dernier, pour écrire en groupe. Tous les quatre. Alex n’était pas encore arrivé, et j’aurais dû l’attendre car je n’avais jamais fait de snowboard avant. On était à Apsen, qui est très réputée pour le snowboard et le ski, et je me suis dit « J’ai super envie d’essayer le snowboard ! » et Alex m’a dit « Attends-moi ! ». Parce qu’Alex fait du snowboard depuis qu’il est petit. Mais je ne l’ai pas attendu… J’ai descendu une colline et je me suis cassé les côtes dans les dix premières secondes du premier jour d’un séjour de deux semaines. Comme on écrivait beaucoup pour cet album, à chaque fois que je rigolais, j’étais genre [Jack se met à tousser, ndlr].

Alex : Jack avait mal.

Jack : J’avais mal ! Et ça se ressent beaucoup à travers l’album. J’aurais dû attendre Alex.

Pozzo Live : Si vous pouviez dire quelque chose au vous d’il y a 15 ans, qu’est-ce ce serait ? 

Jack : C’est pile quand on commençait à tourner.

Alex : Je dirais : Campe sur tes positions, fais confiance à ton instinct, et…

Jack : Et n’oublies pas de prendre ta douche. Personnellement je ne me douchais pas trop quand j’avais 18 ans. J’ai appris ça à la dure sur le Wrapped Tour. Le Wrapped Tour c’était dur, on avait du mal à trouver des douches. On se mettait à l’arrière du tour bus et on s’aspergeait au tuyau d’arrosage.

Pozzo Live : Si on déduit bien, on vous revoit dans un an pour le nouvel album ?

Alex : C’est l’idée. Maintenant que les choses sont revenues à la normale, et qu’on peut retourner sur la route, on a l’intention de tourner comme on le faisait avant la pandémie et avant que tout ralentisse. On est surexcité à l’idée d’être en tournée à nouveau, et de tourner à l’international. On sera vite de retour, c’est génial et on a hâte.

Pozzo Live : Quel groupe ou artiste vous conseilleriez à Pozzo Live d’interviewer ensuite ? 

Alex : Je dirais Lauran Hibberd et Games We Play, nos premières parties pendant cette tournée.

Jack : Emmyn de Games We Play est un bon ami à nous, et c’est une des personnes les plus drôles que j’ai rencontré de toute ma vie.

Alex : C’est un personnage. Ça vaut le coup de parler à Emmyn, et Lauran est géniale. Elle est très talentueuse, et ses compositions sont incroyables. Lauran Hibberd et Games We Play. On les a emmenés avec nous pour une bonne raison, on les aime tous les deux.

Jack : On les emmenés pour vous ! Donc vous devriez les interviewer.

Pozzo Live: How are you doing? How are your families and closed ones doing?

Alex: We’re great, everybody’s good. We’re happy to be here you know, it’s been since 2017 that we’ve been over touring in Europe so it’s kind of incredible to be back.

Pozzo Live: It’s been over 5 years since you haven’t come to Europe, we’re so happy to have you back! We hope you’re happy too, please say yes!

Jack: NO ! Yeah we’re very happy. Having waited this long, it feels even better to be back here.

Pozzo Live: Your album Wake Up, Sunshine was released since the last time you were here. How did you prepare for that release? Were you scared of the feedback due to the world situation at the time?

Alex: I mean, yeah it was definitely a weird time to be putting out music. There was even a few moments when we thought about not putting the record out because things were so uncertain. But we sorta decided for ourselves that we thought our fans and the audience out there would benefit for new music, and just still feeling connected to something when everything was so disconnected. So we rolled with the punches and that kinda became our lockdown record. But the unfortunate part of that was that we didn’t really get to tour on it too much, so it’s really cool to be over here now. Not only debuting the new songs live but also playing the songs from Wake up, sunshine over here in Europe. It’s pretty rad.

Pozzo Live: With three new singles out, we suppose a new album is on the way. What can you tell us about it? We wanna know EVERYTHING!

Alex: Well it’s music.

Jack: It’s thirteen songs.

Alex: I’m so excited. Tell me I’m Alive, is kind of anthology record of all the songs that we worked on and put together through much of lockdown, even after we put Wake up, Sunshine out. Because we weren’t able to tour, we were able to write music, and keep creating. Through those couple years as the world got  back to normal or some version of a new normal, we just carried on making music. And a lot of that is how this record came together. It’s a really exciting album, it’s a great collection of songs, and I’m very excited that it’s coming out soon.

Jack: Some of the songs were written during the pandemic like two years ago so we’re ready to get it out, it’s been a long time in the making.

Pozzo Live : All Time Low have been around for 20 years now. After all these years, did your vision evolve? The fact that you are famous people now, your relationship with your fans whether it is on or off stage?

Alex: We have been at this for a long time and it’s been amazing to sort of grow up with our fans. I think one of the coolest takeaways for us is we started this band when were 17-18 years old and we played for a young audience then and we were sort of speaking to our peers. As we’ve grown up in the band, I think it’s very cool that we’ve had a lot of those fans from the beginning grow with us. But also we’ve had new waves of fans who are younger come in and get on board. I think that’s always amazing because there’s this constant repetition of people discovering the music and discovering the band, and people come on board for a new record and then go back and listen to our old music. It’s really amazing to form those connections.

Jack: I think personally we, as fans of other bands, have a similar relationship. I was telling him the other day that there are bands I’m finding out about last week that have been around for fifteen years. I think it’s so cool that music isn’t cyclical like that. You can fall in love with a band at any moment in their career and still be a massive fan. I was telling Alex that I fell in love with The Smiths last year. I LOVE THE SMITHS! And they’ve been around for a long time. I think that’s what so cool about music.

Pozzo Live: How do you organize yourselves for writing sessions? Are you all together, or is there a leader that writes the majority on his own?

Alex: It’s kind of different for every song, I would say. There have been songs that I’ve worked on separately from the band, and other songs, more recently especially on Wake up, Sunshine and the new album, Tell me I’m Alive, where we did all that together. Jack has been writing a lot more lately. There’s no set way, it’s whatever feels right in the moment. But I do know that one of the things I love about getting all four of us to write under one roof is that I think that brings a lot of energy to the songs that doesn’t happen when it’s just me and the producer or something like that. Something comes through in what everybody brings to the table and the songs just end up having a better energy to them I think, when we write them all together.

Pozzo Live: Do you have a funny tour anecdote to tell us? Whether it’s something that happened onstage or off stage.

Jack: We rented a house in Aspen last year to write as a full band. Like the four of us. Alex hadn’t gotten in yet (6min30 ???) and I should’ve waited for him because I never snowboarded before. We were in Aspen which is very famous for snowboarding and skiing, and I was like “I really want to try snowboarding!” and Alex was like “Wait for me!”, because Alex has been snowboarding since he was a kid. And I didn’t wait for him. I went down the hill and broke my ribs within the first ten seconds on the first day of a two-week trip. As we were writing a lot of this record, every time I’d laugh I was like *cough cough*

Alex: Jack was in pain

Jack: I was in pain! And that really comes through on the record. I should have waited for Alex.

Pozzo Live: If you could say something to yourselves 15 years ago, what would you say? 

Jack: That’s like right when we started touring.

Alex: I would say: stick to your guns, trust your gut, and…

Jack: and don’t forget to shower! I personally didn’t shower too much when I was eighteen. I had to learn that lesson on Wrapped Tour. Wrapped Tour was tough, it was tough to find showers. We just used to stand at the back of the bus and spray him down with the hose.

Pozzo Live: If we guess right, we’ll see you again next year for the next album?

Alex: That’s the hope. Now that things are back to normal and that we’re able to be on the road again, we are fully intent on touring like we were touring prior to the pandemic and everything slowing down a lot. We’re really excited to be back on tour and especially around the world and touring internationally. Sooner than later we’ll be back, which is great, we can’t wait.

Pozzo Live: Which band or artist do you advise Pozzo Live to interview next?

Alex: I gotta say Lauran Hibberd and Games We Play, our support acts on this tour.

Jack: Emmyn from Games We Play is a close friend of ours and he is one of the most funny people I’ve met in my entire life.

Alex: He’s a character. It’s worth talking to Emmyn. Lauran’s amazing. She’s very talented and her songwriting is so incredible. Lauran Hibberd and Games We Play. We brought them on tour for a reason, we love them both.

Jack: We brought them for you so I think you guys should interview them!
