Thundermother – Rencontre avec Filippa Nässil

A l’occasion de la sortie de Black and Gold nous avons rencontré Filippa Nässil. La fondatrice et guitariste de Thundermother nous a parlé de ce cinquième album paru à l’été 2022.

Pozzo Live : Comment ça va, est ce que tout le monde va bien ?

Filippa Nässil : Ça va super merci, ça fait du bien de revenir en Europe, nous avons passé pas mal de temps aux Etats-Unis et au Canada.

Pozzo Live : Votre cinquième album est sorti cet été, un album tous les deux ans, on a l’impression que vous êtes organisées et carrée !

Filippa Nässil : [rires] Oui j’imagine, du coup ça veut dire qu’on peut se reposer cette année ? Comme on vient juste de diffuser ce dernier album on peut y aller tranquille maintenant haha. Mais oui Black & Gold vient de sortir et nous sommes très fières.

Pozzo Live: Est-ce que vous écrivez en tournée ou vous attendez d’être en studio et vous séparez la tournée et l’écriture ?

Filippa Nässil : Nous écrivons pendant la tournée mais pas pour Thundermother. C’est plutôt pour nous-mêmes, pour notre santé mentale tu vois ? [rires] C’est un peu comme une thérapie de groupe. Mais quand on écrit pour Thundermother on se rencontre dans le studio pour écrire ensemble, assez souvent d’ailleurs.

Pozzo Live : Tous ensemble à chaque fois ou tu écris parfois de ton côté et ensuite tu partage ton idée avec les autres membres du groupe plus tard ?

Filippa Nässil : Absolument, j’ai par exemple écrit Stratosphere sur le nouvel album de mon côté et ensuite Emlee a écrit par exemple Borrowed Time là où elle habite avec un ami qui s’appelle Johan Randén. Ensuite le reste du groupe, Emlee et moi ou Guernica et moi nous écrivons en studio. Nous avons aussi invité un ami Palle Hammarlund dans certaines chansons, notre producteur s’est impliqué dans certaines chansons aussi ! A la fin, les meilleures chansons sont mises dans l’album et le reste à la poubelle !

Pozzo Live : Votre musique sonne comme un bon mélange entre nouveau et vieux hard rock avec une puissance dans la voix rappelant Lizzy Hale de Halestorm. Quels groupes vous ont inspirés pour avoir ce son signature ?

Filippa Nässil : J’avais 24 ans quand pendant un stage dans un studio j’ai dit au producteur « ce que joue ce groupe ressemble beaucoup à AC/DC ». Il s’est un peu énervé en me disant « ce n’est pas une mauvaise chose ! C’est une bonne chose ! ». Et dans ma tête je me suis dit « Mon dieu mais il a raison ! » et à partir de là je suis devenue obsédée par AC/DC. C’est comme ça que j’ai décidé de lancer Thundermother. Avant ça j’étais perdue, j’écoutais tout mais je ne savais pas ce que j’aimais jouer. A l’école j’avais pu jouer du Van Halen ou d’autres groupes. Et je ne connaissais pas encore les filles, j’ai créé le groupe en 2017 et elles sont arrivées à ce moment-là. En tout cas AC/DC a changé ma vie et je sais que c’est ce genre de son que je veux produire. Ça a pris du temps de réaliser que la musique simple est la meilleure parce que c’est difficile de jouer simple. Tout le monde dit que « Highway to Hell » est facile, ça ne l’est pas.

Pozzo Live: Est-ce que tu as entendu parler d’un groupe de métal français « Pogo Car Crash Control » ? Leur bassiste qui est une femme parle souvent de la situation des artistes féminies dans la sphère rock/métal. Elle a d’ailleurs lancé l’hashtag #morewomenonstage sur les réseaux. Quel est ton point de vue là-dessus ?

Filippa Nässil : Par expérience, je sais qu’il y a beaucoup de groupes d’Opera/Métal ou les vocalistes sont des femmes. Il y a très peu de groupes de rock composés uniquement de femmes, du coup nous sommes plutôt uniques de ce côté-là enfin au moment où nous avons commencé en tout cas. Je vois maintenant de plus en plus de groupes avec cette particularité émerger et spécialement en Suède. Je vois beaucoup de groupes s’inspirer et c’est exactement ce qu’on voulait. Tout le monde peut faire du Rock n Roll, on n’a pas à être un mec d’un certain Age avec les cheveux long.

Tu peux ressembler à ce que tu veux et faire ce que tu as envie. Le Rock n roll c’est être libre, faire ce qui te plaît et répandre la joie tu sais. Bien sûr qu’on a eu des challenges, je veux dire, quand on est en tournée et qu’on est accompagnées par un petit ami ou un gars de l’équipe les gens vont se diriger direct vers l’homme. Eh oh je suis juste là en fait ! Il ne sait même pas jouer d’un instrument lui… Ça peut être un ami aussi et c’est le problème, ils vont très souvent voir le mec. Cependant je peux voir que ça s’améliore au fur et à mesure de la croissance du groupe mais c’est quand même plus dur que ce que les gens imaginent. J’espère que ça changera, je pense que ça changera.

Pozzo Live: La bassiste de Pogo Car Crash Control nous racontait que pendant la tournée on lui demandais souvent si elle était la copine d’un des membre du groupe

Filippa Nässil : Mais oui c’est exactement ça ! Ce qui est aussi arrivé plusieurs fois c’est qu’on voyageait avec une petite équipe de 4 hommes. Et on était là en pyjama et les cheveux détachés ils n’essayaient pas de comprendre qui on était. Et ensuite ils réalisaient après le concert « oups ». C’est plutôt marrant je trouve. Je rigole toujours intérieurement [rires]. Il y a des hauts et des bas en fait, ce qui nous rend incognito parfois nous fait aussi sortir du lot vu qu’on est différentes.

Pozzo Live: Est-ce que tu penses, c’est une question ouverte, que les artistes musicaux se doivent d’avoir un message dans leur musique ?

Filippa Nässil : C’est une question intéressante ! Personnellement, j’adore écrire des chansons mais j’ai toujours été très mauvaise pour écrire des paroles. Cependant j’ai profité de l’année passée pour m’améliorer sur ce point. J’essaye d’écrire tous les jours. Je pense que c’est à l’artiste d’intégrer un message mais si cela ne parle à personne, ça ne marchera jamais. Il faut que ce soit quelque chose auquel les gens peuvent s’identifier.

Pour moi un bon morceau a des paroles que les gens écoutent, que tu peux jouer sur une simple guitare acoustique et que tu peux chanter facilement. Si tu ne peux pas faire ça, je ne pense pas que ce soit bon à garder. Après il y a aussi bien sûr les autres styles de musiques qui ne nécessitent pas de paroles, ça reste génial. Mais je préfère des bonnes paroles avec un message.

Pozzo Live: Est-ce qu’il y a une partie du monde où vous n’êtes jamais allé et où vous adoreriez jouer ?

Filippa Nässil : Dans le groupe nous aimerions aller en Amérique du Sud. Nous adorerions jouer à Rio [de Janeiro]. Les parents de Guernica sont originaires d’Uruguay en plus donc ce serait vraiment cool.
Sinon l’Asie parce que nous n’avons joué que deux fois là-bas côté Turquie et Inde mais ça serait vraiment super d’aller à Tokyo par exemple. Ou sinon l’Australie.

Pozzo Live: Vous n’êtes jamais allées en Australie ?

Filippa Nässil : Non, on a eu une offre qu’on a dû refuser vu qu’on revenait à peine des States. On était vraiment crevées à ce moment-là.

Pozzo Live: Oui c’est vrai que ça fait une trotte et il vaut mieux être bien reposé pour jouer là-bas

Filippa Nässil : Oui et l’Amérique du Nord est un gros morceau. Toutes les personnes que je rencontre me disent « tu dois vivre là-bas pour pouvoir croître suffisamment ». Mais nous sommes plutôt optimistes en se disant « Non, on peut juste supporter quelques groupes et s’en sortir ». Mais le rêve serait d’avoir un hit aux Etats-Unis parce qu’après ça on a plus besoin de travailler, on peu juste faire du rock n roll pour le fun et arrêter de galérer autant.

Pozzo Live: Quel groupe ou artiste nous conseilleriez-vous d’interviewer ensuite ?

Filippa Nässil : Je sais que Dirty Honey sera dans le coin très prochainement. Ils sont de Los Angeles et sont fantastiques. Vous devez interviewer leur chanteur, il est très bon et ce sont tous d’excellents lyricistes. D’ailleurs je vais les voir quand ils passent en Janvier en Suède. Je vous conseille d’écouter ce qu’ils font.

Pozzo Live: How are you truly, is everybody okay around you ?

Filippa Nässil : I’m really good thank you, it’s nice to be back home in Europe, we spent a long time in America and Canada.

Pozzo Live: Your fifth album came out this summer, one album each two years, you seem to be organized and square !

Filippa Nässil : [laughs] I guess so yeah, so that means we have a year off now, right? Because we just released this one [laughs] we can take it easy. But yeah, we just released Black and Gold and we are all very proud.

Pozzo Live: Do you write on tour or do you just wait to be in the studio and separate touring and writing ?

Filippa Nässil : Yeah, we all write on tour but not for Thundermother, but like just for yourself or for your own, you know sanity? [laughs] Because it’s like a group therapy you know. But when we write for Thundermother we meet up in the studio often and write together.

Pozzo Live: All together each time or maybe you can write you part in your side and meet with the idea after

Filippa Nässil : Absolutely, I wrote Stratosphere on the new album by myself and then Emlee wrote for example Borrowed time in where she lives with a friend called Johan Randén. And then the rest me, Emlee or me and Guernica, all of us wrote it together in the studio. We also invited a friend Palle Hammarlund in some songs, and our producer was involved in some songs too. So, the best song wins! The best songs go in the album, the rest in the bin!

Pozzo Live: Your music sounds like a good mix between old and new Hardrock with vocals with the strength like Lizzy Hale from Halestorm. What bands inspired you to get this kind of sound ? 

Filippa Nässil : I was twenty-four when I did my internship in a studio and I told the producer, this band « ??? », they just sound like AC/DC. And then he was really angry with me. « That’s not a bad thing, that’s a good thing! » You know and AC/DC is the best band in the world and the just pay their tribute. And I got my mind going « Jesus he’s right » and I got like obsessed with AC/DC. And that how I wanted to start Thundermother. I was lost before that, I listened to everything, I did not know what I love to play I played in school Van Halen and other groups. And the girls, we didn’t know each other by then. I created the band and they came in 2017. But AC/DC changed my life and I know this is what I wanna do. It took a long time for me to realise that the simple music is the best because it’s difficult to play simple. Everyone says « Highway to Hell » is easy, it’s not.

Pozzo Live: Do you know a French metal band named Pogo Car Crash Control? The bassist is a woman and she talks really often about the feminine artist situation inside rock/metal sphere. She started the hashtag #morewomenonstage on the socials. What’s your point of view about being a woman in this sphere ?

Filippa Nässil : In my experience there is a lot of Opera/Metal bands with a female vocalist. Not many classic rock bands with only females, so we are pretty unique in that way at least when we started. But now I see they are popping up everywhere especially in Sweden. I see many bands getting inspired and that’s exactly what we wanted. Anybody can play Rock n roll, you don’t have to be a guy in a certain age with long hair. You can look how the fuck you want and do whatever you want.

Rock n roll is about being free and doing your thing and spreading happiness you know. So, in my experience, of course we met some challenges I mean people tend to if we touring for example, if we have a boyfriend with us or a crew, they go talk to the man, I’m standing right here you know, he doesn’t even know how to play music or whatever. It can be any friend following us but they go to the man and that’s the problem, I think. But I see it getting better and better the bigger we get, but it still harder than people imagine. But I hope that will change too, I think it will.

Pozzo Live: The French bassist told us that when they are on tour with her band, often the guys she meets asks if she is the girlfriend of the singer or the guitarist…

Filippa Nässil : Yeah exactly! That happened a few times we travelled with a baby crew with four men, and we were there with our pyjamas and our hair in the middle of our head. They don’t see us, who are these girls you know. Then they realised after the show “shit/oops”. That’s pretty funny though. I always laugh a little bit inside [lough out loud]

Pozzo Live: Do you think, it’s an open question, musical artists have to put a message inside their music ?

Filippa Nässil : Interesting question! I love writing songs but I always been very bad at writing lyrics. But I dedicated the last year improving myself in writing lyrics. I try to write every day. I think it’s up to the artist but if it’s just nonsense, you will never grab the listener. It has to be something people can relate to. For me a good song has a lyric that people listen to and you can play on a simple acoustic guitar. If you can’t play it on an acoustic guitar and sing it, I don’t think it’s good enough. But then there is of course this kind of progressive music with no vocals it could be amazing of course. But I like good lyric with a message but it’s up to the artist.

Pozzo Live: Is there a part of the world where you’ve never been and in which you would love to play ?

Filippa Nässil : We in Thundermother we all would love to go to South America. We would love to play in Rio [de Janeiro]. Guernica’s parents are from Uruguay by the way so that would be really cool.
South America or Asia because we only played there two times but that was like in Turkey and India. But it would be really cool to come to Tokyo or something like that.
And Australia.

Pozzo Live: Never went to Australia ?

Filippa Nässil : No, we got some offer be we got to turn them down, it was right now and we were like « no we just came back from the states we are too tired »

Pozzo Live: Yeah, it’s a long trip and it has to be worth it to play there. You have to be well rested.

Filippa Nässil : Yeah, and North America is a big continent and everyone I meet say you have to live there to be able to make it. But we are optimistic « naah we can just support a few bands”. But of course, the dream would be to have one hit in America, because then you won’t have to work anywhere ever. We can all just do rock n roll for fun and not struggle so much.

Pozzo Live: I have one last question, it’s like our signature question and we ask it to everyone: which band or artist do you think Pozzo live should interview next ?

Filippa Nässil : I know that Dirty Honey from Los Angeles is coming here very soon. They are fantastic, you should interview the lead singer, he’s really good and they are all fantastic song writers. I’m going to their show in January in Sweden, you should check them out
