Simple Plan – Pierre et Jeff au Slam Dunk de Lyon

Vendredi 02 juin 2023 s’est déroulé la toute première édition du Slam Dunk France à la Halle Tony Garnier de Lyon. A cette occasion nous avons pu échanger avec Pierre et Jeff de Simple Plan.

Après avoir discuté avec Séb et Chuck en septembre dernier à l’Accor Arena, nous nous sommes entretenus cette fois-ci avec le chanteur et l’autre guitariste du groupe.

Pozzo Live : Comment ça va ? Vous êtes arrivés hier, vous avez visité un peu la ville ?

Pierre : Moi j’ai visité un peu j’suis arrivé hier à l’hôtel vers 3-4 heures de l’après-midi. J’ai eu le temps de marcher un peu et puis on a été chanceux parce qu’il fait super beau on a une belle journée. Chez moi ça fait à peu près 3-4 mois qu’il fait gris et froid.

Jeff : Ah ouais ?

Pierre : Ouais la Californie c’est bizarre bizarre cette année alors ça fait du bien. J’ai visité un peu et puis aujourd’hui même après être venu ici à la salle de spectacle je suis allé prendre un café, j’ai pris les petites mobylettes les petits scooters payants, c’était cool. Et toi ?

Jeff : Moi aussi j’ai visité mais j’avais perdu mes valises hier alors c’était quand même…

Pierre : Encore ?

Jeff : Excessivement dramatique, c’est maintenant une normalité dans ma vie.

Pierre : T’es pas chanceux.

Jeff : Nan vraiment pas. Mais à part ça c’était vraiment cool, moi aussi j’étais déjà venu à Lyon en touriste dans le passé.

Pierre : On a joué ici en .. 2016 je crois ?

Jeff : Ouais, super bel endroit.

Pozzo Live : À propos de votre processus d’écriture d’album : est-ce que cela commence uniquement après les tournées quand vous retournez en studio ? Ou bien est-ce qu’en tournée comme maintenant vous prenez le temps d’écrire des idées de mélodies, de paroles ?

Pierre : Non, pour nous ça prend je pense 100 % de focus… C’est quoi focus en français ?

Jeff : Tu te dédies à la tache, amplement.

Pierre : Ouais faut vraiment être dédié, ça arrive pas juste comme ça, ça prend vraiment un temps alloué qui est  juste pour faire la musique alors on fait ça entre les tournées.

Jeff : On avait déjà essayé là deux bus avec le studio, finalement y’en a un c’était le party bus et puis l’autre c’était un peu plus tranquille.

Pierre : Ouais ça a pas marché.

Pozzo Live : Est-ce que vous prenez le temps d’écouter de la musique au quotidien ? Qu’est-ce qui vous inspire vos musiques ?

Pierre : Je te laisse commencer ?

Jeff : On écoute plein de trucs. Je pense que ce qui est cool d’être musicien c’est d’être ouvert d’esprit puis d’être ouvert à tous les genres musicaux alors on écoute plein plein de trucs. Ce qui est inspirant c’est quand t’entends une bonne chanson, tu sais, des bonnes idées d’arrangement, y’a toujours des truc à découvrir chez les autres. Nommer un groupe en particulier je sais pas, moi j’écoute vraiment plein de trucs, de plein plein de genres différents. Je sais pas ce qui m’a inspiré récemment… J’écoute des trucs très alternatifs en ce moment, je sais pas si ça serait même connu. Autant du country que du métal, que du rock, j’écoute vraiment tout.
Pierre : Moi en ce moment j’écoute un groupe qui a vraiment pas rapport avec le pop punk mais j’aime ça quand je fais la cuisine chez nous, j’ai des enfants alors je fais la cuisine, le ménage, tout ça et puis j’aime bien un groupe qui s’appelle Khruangbin.

Jeff : Khruangbin ?

Pierre : K-H-A-R-U-A-N-G-B-I-N

Jeff : C’est ça qu’on a écouté sur la dernière tournée tu t’en es pas aperçu.

Pierre : Ouais je sais mais j’aime vraiment ça dans le background, ça a pas rapport avec le pop punk du tout, mais…

Jeff : C’est comme de la musique porno des années 70.

Pierre : Ouais, du-du-du du-du.

Pozzo Live : Lors de vos dernières tournées communes avec Sum 41, est-ce qu’à un moment Deryck Whibley est venu sur scène pour chanter Ruin My Life ?

Pierre : Non c’est pas arrivé. Je pense que Deryck, je dirais, surtout avec la pandémie et tout ça,  il voulait rester en bonne santé. On a fait une tournée aux États-Unis puis en plus après quelques jours il est tombé malade alors il voulait faire attention alors on a fait pas de performance ensemble. Malheureusement.

Jeff : C’est quand même cool qu’il soit sur la chanson, on est vraiment vraiment super heureux et tout ça puis bon ben écoute c’est son truc à lui, je sais pas. On vit tous un peu  la tournée différemment, c’est quand même difficile, ça paraît très glamour et ça l’est jusqu’à un certain point mais…

Pierre : C’est exigeant.

Jeff : C’est exigeant quand même les voyages, tout ça, pis on rencontre beaucoup de gens. Et puis étrangement je pense qu’après la pandémie on s’est affaiblis, le système immunitaire s’est un peu affaibli et moi je sais pas pourquoi mais je suis tombé malade je sais pas 10 fois depuis le retour à la tournée. Pourtant avant jamais ça m’arrivait, alors… Voilà. Vive les masques, c’est une super bonne idée !

Pierre : Un sujet controversé.

Pozzo Live : Est-ce que vous voyez une différence notable entre les différents publics du monde ?

Jeff : Bien sûr. Ouais, je pense que oui c’est sûr. Quand tu vas dans un pays différent il y a des pays plus exotiques que d’autres, comme là on vient de faire une tournée en Asie du sud-est. Nécessairement tu vois des choses que tu vois pas nécessairement ailleurs. Il y a beaucoup de gens qui sont musulmans, voilés, en Asie tu vas voir des gens de l’Inde, tu vas voir des gens de Singapour, tu vas voir des gens qui viennent d’Indonésie, alors tu sais ça fait des mix quand même cool… L’énergie est différente. Si on va au Mexique, si on va au Brésil c’est la folie là, au point que même honnêtement c’est le bordel franchement… Et puis c’est toujours cool d’entendre parler français quand on arrive en France. Tu sais, juste le fait de se promener dans les villes, tu sais c’est agréable parce que c’est facile, ça ressemble un peu à ce dont on est habitués. Mais je pense que c’est ça, c’est surtout les cultures différentes. Mais nécessairement l’internet, les réseaux sociaux, fait que ça s’uniformise aussi en même temps, tu sais. Peut-être à défaut, c’est peut-être pas ce qui est la meilleure des choses mais c’est comme ça. Malheureusement tu retrouves un Mcdo dans à peu près toutes les places au monde, ce qui est pas nécessairement la meilleure des choses mais c’est là qu’on en est.

Pozzo Live : Nous savons que vous êtes amateurs de café. Où est-ce qu’on boit le meilleur café dans le monde selon vous ?

Jeff : Dans ma cuisine, c’est clair, c’est vraiment là le meilleur café.

Pierre : Ouais, puisque le café vient de plein d’endroits dans le monde, moi personnellement j’aime bien les cafés africains et puis j’ai eu une belle expérience à Luxembourg, y’avait un petit café qu’on a eu et puis la demoiselle qui était propriétaire du…

Jeff : La canadienne là ?

Pierre : Ouais.

Jeff : Je m’en souviens moi aussi.

Pierre : Le café là était vraiment bon, là, ça s’appelle Florence, le nom du café. Mais vraiment c’est plutôt l’origine du café d’où il vient et pour moi c’est j’aime vraiment les cafés de l’Afrique de L’Est, je crois ? Oui c’est ça.

Jeff : C’est spécifique ça, on peut pas faire mieux que ça là.

Pierre : Mais en France ce qui est drôle, c’est que le café est toujours bon ici. Je pense que d’avoir un mauvais café ça existe pas ici, ils sont tous pas mal bons. Moi j’trouve en tous cas, comparé aux États-Unis.

Jeff : L’Allemagne aussi c’est assez solide pour le café.

Pierre : Ouais ouais, absolument.

Jeff : Mais c’est l’Italie le meilleur, faut le dire.

Pozzo Live : Est-ce que vous avez des conseils pour entretenir et maintenir sa voix et sa forme au quotidien et en tournée ?

Pierre : Ben pour nous ce qui est amusant c’est que d’être sur la scène ça nous stimule. On bouge pendant d’habitude 1h – 1h30 chaque jour y’a beaucoup de mouvement c’est assez physique quand même et puis il fait chaud alors on a un peu le cardio qui est activé. Mais pour moi c’est vraiment le mouvement c’est de faire des choses… J’aime bien faire du yoga. Sinon essayer de bien manger. Manger c’est aussi important sinon pas plus important que…

Jeff : Ouais dormir, manger, c’est peut-être plus important que l’exercice.

Pierre : Le sommeil, ouais, le sommeil… Très important.

Jeff : Ça ça marche pas très bien. Moi la même chose pour moi. Mais moi je pense que je prends du poids à la maison, j’en perds sur la route, on s’équilibre un petit peu. Mais c’est sûr que c’est difficile de garder le même niveau d’énergie qu’on a sur la route à la maison, là, tu sais.

Pozzo Live : Vous vous êtes mis à la page en créant un compte tiktok et en faisant régulièrement des petites vidéos pendant vos tournées. Est-ce que cela est venu naturellement de l’un de vous ? Est-ce cela vous a été proposé par votre équipe ? Vos enfants ?

Jeff : Ben en fait, tu vois, on a eu la chance pendant la pandémie que ‘I’m just a kid’ devienne une sorte de succès viral incroyable, même que franchement on savait pas particulièrement bien ce que TikTok faisait ou à part les petites danses on comprenait pas vraiment l’effet de la plateforme. Et puis nos amis nous en ont parlé. Ils nous ont demandé “regardez là, les gars, c’est vraiment gros, vous devriez porter attention”. On a commencé à y porter attention et puis après ça on s’est dit écoute la plateforme semble attirer d’autres intérêts que justement les danses qu’on connaissait et on s’est lancés là-dedans comme ça, c’est vraiment ‘I’m just a kid’ qui nous a introduits au phénomène.

On a des gens autour de nous maintenant, des gens dans notre équipe qui sont plus futés que nous et qui réussissent à faire des vidéos qui sont quand même cool, parce qu’on veut pas non plus perdre l’identité du groupe, on veut pas commencer justement à faire des conneries qui nous ressemblent pas, mais on a toujours été présents sur les réseaux sociaux, on a toujours trouvé une manière d’exprimer notre identité sans nécessairement dénaturer ce que le groupe est.

Pozzo Live : On retrouve en effet le côté amusement que vous avez avec vos clips ou vos shooting photos.

Jeff : Ben c’est ça. C’est dans le même esprit, ça change pas grand-chose. C’est plus court, c’est plus facile à faire maintenant, c’est tout.

Pozzo Live : Est-ce que vous avez trouvé la bonne méthode pour allier vie de tournée et vie de famille ? Est-ce que parfois vos familles vous suivent pendant les tournées ?

Pierre : Je pense que c’est…

Jeff : C’est un défi de taille.

Pierre : Ouais puis c’est un travail constant, c’est difficile de continuer mais écoutez dans le fond ce qu’on essaie de faire c’est qu’on essaie de limiter notre temps sur les tournées. On essaie de ne pas faire plus de 3 ou 4 ou des fois 5 semaines en tournées et on essaie de balancer ça avec…

Jeff : Ce qui est énorme pour une famille, là, quand tu pars 5 semaines c’est fou pour eux là y’a plein d’évènements qui se passent.

Pierre : Alors on fait attention avec ça et puis on essaie d’avoir beaucoup de temps à la maison entre les tournées et puis dans le fond c’est ça c’est la seule chose qu’on peut faire.

Jeff : Tous mes enfants sont ados donc ils sont vraiment contents quand je pars, ils ont la maison à eux seuls.

Pierre : Party !

Jeff : Party, y’en a eu déjà trop ! (rires)

Pozzo Live : Quel groupe ou artiste vous conseilleriez à Pozzo Live d’interviewer ensuite ?

Jeff : Moi j’ai Biffy Clyro, très bon groupe.

Pierre : Billy Talent !

Jeff : Oh !

Pierre : Du Canada.

Jeff : Accessible en plus.

Pierre : Ouais, très bon groupe.

Jeff : Il est vraiment bon leur nouvel album.

Pierre : Moi j’ai pas écouté.

Jeff : Vraiment, vraiment solide.

Pierre : J’en doute pas sont très talentueux, c’est un très bon groupe avec de la musique très originale. Biffy Clyro ou Billy Talent, voilà.

ENGLISH VERSION OF THE INTERVIEW :

Pozzo Live : How are you doing ? You arrived yesterday, did you have time to go around the city and visit ?

Pierre : I did. I arrived yesterday at the hotel at around 3 or 4 p.m. and I had time to walk for a bit. We were very lucky because the weather is really nice, we had a beautiful day. Back home it’s been grey and cold for about 3 or 4 months now.

Jeff : Really?

Pierre : Yeah, California is kind of weird this year so it’s nice. I visited the city for a bit and even today after I came here at the venue I went for coffee, I took one of the little moped, little scooters you can pay for, it was cool. You?

Jeff : I visited but I had lost my suitcase yesterday.

Pierre : Again?

Jeff : It was excessively dramatic, it’s become a norm in my life now.

Pierre : You’re unlucky.

Jeff : Yeah, pretty much. But apart from that it was really cool, I had also already come to Lyon in the past as a tourist.

Pierre : We played a show here in 2016 I think?

Jeff : Yeah, really nice place.

Pozzo Live : About your writing process : does it start only once you’re off tour and back in the studio? Or do you take some time on tour to write down melody or lyric ideas?

Pierre : No, for us it takes 100% focus… What’s the French for focus?

Jeff : You commit to the task.

Pierre : Yes, you really need to be committed, it won’t happen just like that, it really takes some specific time that’s only to create music, so we do it in-between tours.

Jeff : We already tried like two tour buses with a studio in one but in the end one was like the party bus and the other one was a bit calmer.

Pierre : Yeah it didn’t work.

Pozzo Live : Do you take time to listen to some music in your daily life? What inspires you to write music?

Pierre : I’ll let you go first?

Jeff : Well, we listen to a lot of things. I think what’s cool about being a musician is to be open minded, open to all kinds of music, so we listen to a lot of things. What’s inspirant is when you listen to a good song, good arrangement ideas… There’s always something to discover in other people’s work. Naming one particular band, I don’t know.

I listen to a lot a things with many different genres, I don’t know what inspired me recently… I’ll say I listen to very alternative stuff at the moment, I don’t even know if people would know about it. As much country as metal or rock music, I’ll listen to pretty much anything.

Pierre : At the moment I listen to a group that really has nothing to do with pop-punk, but I love it when I’m cooking at home. I have children so I cook, I clean, and all that, and I love a band named Khruangbin.

Jeff : Khruangbin?

Pierre : K-H-A-R-U-A-N-G-B-I-N …

Jeff : We listened to that on our previous tour, you didn’t even notice.

Pierre : Yes I know but I really like that as background music, it doesn’t have anything to do with pop-punk, but…

Jeff : It’s like porn music from the 70s.

Pierre : Yeah, du-du-du du-du.

Pozzo Live : During your last tours with Sum 41, has Deryck Whibley come on stage to sing Ruin my Life?

Pierre : No it didn’t happen. I think that Deryck, I’d say especially with the pandemic and all that, he wanted to stay healthy. We toured the United States and then after a few days he got sick so he really wanted to be careful so we did not perform together. Unfortunately.

Jeff : It’s cool that he’s part of the song anyway, we’re really really happy about that and all, but yeah it’s his thing, I don’t know. We all go through touring in our own way, it’s quite difficult. It looks glamourous and it is to a certain extent but…

Pierre : It’s demanding.

Jeff : It is demanding. Traveling and all, plus we meet a lot of people and strangely enough, I think that we all got a bit weaker after the pandemic, our immune system got weaker. I don’t know why but I got sick like I don’t know 10 times since we started touring although it never happened before, so… Yeah. Long live the masks!

Pierre : Controversial topic.

Pozzo Live : Is there a difference between the various crowds you play for around the world?

Jeff : Of course. Yes, I think it’s obvious. When you go to different countries, some are more exotic than others. We just toured South-East Asia and you see things that you don’t necessarily see in other countries. Like… Many people there are Muslim, wearing hijabs. You know in Asia you see people from India, Singapour, you’ll see people from Indonesia, so it’s kind of a cool mix of people… The energy is different. If we go to Mexico, to Brasil, things get crazy there, honestly it’s a mess…

And then it’s always cool to hear some French when we land in France. You know just the idea of going around the city you know it’s nice because it’s easy, it’s a bit like what we’re used to. But I think that’s the main thing, different cultures. But social media, the Internet, it kind of standardises everything, you know. Maybe it’s not a good thing, maybe it’s not the best, but… That’s it. Unfortunately you can find a McDonald’s in about every single place in the world, which isn’t necessarily the best ting, but here we are.

Pozzo Live : We know that you are coffee lovers. Where can we drink the best coffee in the world, according to you ?

Jeff : In my kitchen, no questions asked, that’s the best coffee.

Pierre : Yeah! Well, coffee is from various places in the world so personally I like African coffees the best. I had a great time in Luxembourg though, there was a little café we went to and the young woman who owned it…

Jeff : Oh the Canadian one?

Pierre : Yeah.

Jeff : I remember that.

Pierre : And coffee there was really good. The café’s name is Florence. But really it’s about where the coffee comes from and I really love coffee that come from like East Africa, I think? Yeah.

Jeff : Very specific, hard to do better than that.

Pierre : But what’s fun in France is that coffee is always good, here. I think you can’t have bad coffee here, they’re all pretty good. Well, at least I think, compared to the USA.

Jeff : Germany is also pretty solid for coffee.

Pierre : Yeah absolutely.

Jeff : But Italy is the best, it has to be said.

Pozzo Live : Do you have any advice on how to maintain and take care of your voice and health on the daily, when on tour?

Pierre : Well what’s funny for us is that being on stage is… We move around for around an hour, an hour and a half everyday, there’s a lot of moving around, it’s quite physical and it’s hot so there’s cardio involved. But for me it’s really like moving around, doing things… I like doing yoga. And then trying to eat well. Eating is as important, maybe even a bit more…

Jeff : Yeah eating, sleeping, it might be more important than exercising.

Pierre : Sleeping, yeah, sleeping… Very important.

Jeff : That doesn’t really work. For me, I’d say the same thing. Well I think I put on some weight when I’m back home and I lose it on the road, it gets balanced a bit that way. But I have to say it’s difficult to keep the same energy level that we have on the road back home, you know.

Pozzo Live : You kept up to date by creating a TikTok account and regularly posting content while on tour. Did it naturally come from one of you ? From your team? Your kids ?

Jeff : Well, you see, we got lucky during the pandemic and ‘I’m just a kid’ became kind of that viral huge success, and we didn’t even really know what TikTok was, apart from the silly danses. We did not understand the platform’s goal or effect. Then our friends told us about it, they said ‘hey guys you should take a look it’s huge’. We started paying attention and then we figured like, the platform seems to be more than just about the danses we knew and we went into it that way.

Really ‘I’m just a kid’ introduced us to all of this and now we have people around us, in our team, who are smarter than us and know how to make cool videos. We don’t want to lose our band’s identity either, we don’t want to start doing bullshit that’s nothing like us, but we’ve always been present on social media, we always found a way to express our identity without losing who we are in the process.

Pozzo Live : We can in fact see the funny side of the band there, just like you have in some videoclips or photoshoots.

Jeff : Yeah, that’s it. It’s the same spirit, it doesn’t change much. It’s shorter and easier to create now, that’s it.

Pozzo Live : Did you find the ‘right way’ to mix your family and stage lives ? Are your families sometimes with you on the road ?

Pierre : I think it’s…

Jeff : Very challenging.

Pierre : Yeah and it’s a constant work. It’s hard to continue but you know in the end what we’re trying to do is we try to limit our time touring, we try to keep it to 3 or 4 or even sometimes five weeks touring at a time and we try to balance it…

Jeff : Which is huge for a family. When you leave for five weeks it’s crazy for them like so much happens.

Pierre : So we’re careful with that and we try to have as much time as possible at home in between tours and in the end that’s the only thing we can do.

Jeff : All my kids are teenagers so they’re really happy when I leave, they’re home alone.

Pierre : Party !

Jeff : Party… There’s already been too many.

Pozzo Live : Which band or artist should Pozzo Live interview next ?

Jeff : Biffy Clyro, I think, awesome band.

Pierre : Billy Talent !

Jeff : Oh!

Pierre : From Canada.

Jeff : And accessible.

Pierre : Yeah, awesome band.

Jeff : Their new album is really good.

Pierre : I haven’t listened to it.

Jeff : Really really solid.

Pierre : I don’t doubt it, they’re very talented. It’s an awesome band with very unique music. There, Biffy Clyro or Billy Talent.
